First impression of the site was how nice it was to be surrounded by pine trees. Most of the site is hard standing, but we wanted grass – it was roasting hot and it seemed no-one else wanted grass! we got a great spot in front of the under 5 play area – not so great if you don’t have kids and don’t like to hear then playing! – We could sit outside the van and watch them. We did not need levelling blocks but I saw plenty in use in other areas of the site.
Staff were very helpful, we were allowed to stay after 12 on the Sunday once they knew they had enough spaces for the 24 arrivals. It was disappointing that not many people leaving at 12 volunteered this information – it was requested on the reception sign and would have helped us plan.
It was quiet at night and early morning and I liked the darkness of the site. We felt safe with the key barrier entry and banked site boundaries. For a fully rounded review I would say that if you don’t like children, dogs or trees shielding the view of the countryside then you might not like it here.
As for the area, well I am biased as I live in Amber Valley, Derbyshire! It is obviously fantastic! Carsington Reservoir is next door and viewable from the site boundary and some pitches. The visitor center and sailing club is a 30 min slow walk with pushchair along the damn wall (15 min brisk pace). It is a great place for kids with a large play park and water sports. You can hire bikes if you don’t bring your own and can cycle all the way around the reservoir with amazing countryside views. Obviously there is plenty to see and do in Derbyshire and you are centrally placed for Matlock Bath, Chatsworth House, Kedleston Hall and Dovedale etc.
